CONDUCT CONSERVATION relateD RESEARCH with eXPERTS

Students will have the unique experience to conduct conservation research in a rainforest in Uganda!! They will do fieldwork alongside Uganda Wildlife Authority park wardens to perform research on wild monkeys and apes that affects their conservation.

Potential projects include:

  • Studying the feeding behavior of wild monkeys and comparing it to historical data to explore the effects of global change on primate nutrition

  • Understanding how exotic and invasive species affect primate feeding patterns and primate habitats

  • Documenting the effects of human visitors during ecotourism visits on primate ecology and behavior

  • Collecting baseline data on diet and nutrition of endangered primates

  • Research related to human-wildlife conflict


LEARN FIELD SKILLS IN AT A PREMIER RESEARCH SITE IN UGANDA

Students will conduct immersive 8- week summer research alongside Uganda Wildlife Authority park wardens and managers based at Makerere University Biological Field Station in Kibale National Park, Uganda.

  • Learn how to compose a research proposal, carry out the research, analyze the results and present the data at forums at Hunter College.

  • Attend comprehensive orientations to the history, culture and biology of Uganda,

  • Immerse yourself in a tropical rainforest with some of the highest densities of primates in the world.

  • Meet other scholars and students from various universities also interested in biology and the environment.


BECOME AN IRES SCHOLAR: eligibility AND APPLICATION (APPLICATIONS CLOSED- NEXT SCHOLARS WILL BE 2025)

Research experiences are funded by the National Science Foundation through the NSF IRES program. This experience includes airfare, living expenses, research permit fees and local transportation. Students will also receive a stipend. Students must complete the full 8-week program. The program will begin in June 2023*, but applicants must be available to attend a biweekly orientation over zoom in mid-March until the start of the program.

Eligibility: Students must 1) be USA citizens or permanent residents, 2) be a current Hunter College student enrolled as a sophomore or junior undergraduate (less than 100 credits), or in their first year of a Master’s program. 3) be enrolled for Spring 2023 and planning to enroll in Fall 2023. 4) have at least a 2.8 GPA and 5) taken one 200+ level course in biology/ anthropology/ ecology/ environmental science/ geography or animal behavior and earned a B or above.

Preferred: Students with a demonstrated interest in primatology or conservation biology are especially encouraged to apply. Underrepresented minorities are also especially encouraged to apply.

No previous international experience is necessary. No prior research experience is necessary.

Additional note: you must be vaccinated and 2x boosted for COVID19 before travel. As well, a yellow fever vaccine is required to enter Uganda.
